THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES
    School of Economics
      Business essay  作業代寫
    ECON1203 Business and Economic Statistics
    Session 1, 2013
    Major project: CCResort
    Outline
The multinational hotels and resorts group, DGHG, has hired you and you’ve been assigned to the
Business Analytics Department (BAD) who have your first task ready to commence. DGHG has
recently opened a new holiday resort and spa facility on the Central Coast of NSW named CCResort
and they spent a considerable amount of money on promotion. The company is now interested in
doing some market research in order to help determine how the venture is progressing.
The business plan was to position CCResort as an “upmarket” complex that would appeal to families.
It seems the resort has a range of facilities including boat hire, bike hire, beauty and massage services,
restaurants and a small range of boutique shops all of which were planned to generate considerable
revenue over and above the accommodation charges. The company now wants to investigate what
types of customers have been attracted to CCResort, how long they stay and how much they spend.
In outlining what is required, the Head of BAD has stressed that the central question to be addressed
    is:
      Business essay  作業代寫
What type of customer has been attracted to CCResort, how much are they spending at the
resort over and above their accommodation costs and has CCResort been successful in meeting
their key performance indicators (KPI’s) stated in the business plan as:
    1. More than 40% of their customers stay for a full week (i.e. seven nights);
    2. The average customer spends more than $255 per day in excess of accommodation
    costs.
      Business essay  作業代寫
BAD has already collected data for a sample of recent CCResort customers and these data would
seem to be able to shed some light on this question. You have been given the responsibility of
providing a statistical analysis of these data and for producing an associated report.
    Report
It is natural to link different parts of the project to corresponding coverage in lectures and material
contained there will provide useful references.  However, remember you are writing a professional
report for management, not providing a sequence of answers to assignment problems.
The report should include a brief Executive Summary. The management of DGHG are intelligent
people but are not necessarily statisticians. The Executive Summary needs to be non‐technical so that
management can assess what you’ve done and what are your basic conclusions. The Head of BAD is
    2
familiar with the more technical components of the report and will advise management on whether
the conclusions discussed in the Executive Summary are based on sound statistical analysis and hence
    credible.
While the project grade will be based primarily on the substance of your statistical work, the
presentation of the material will also be considered. We are simulating a professional work
experience. Reports should be typed and should use graphical techniques to represent the data.
In order to give you some guidance on what these types of reports might look like, please check the
“Statistical Reports” section of “SIA” on the course website where actual examples of statistical
    reports are provided.
As there would be in an actual work environment, there is no ONE RIGHT way to approach such
reports and hence there is no rigid template for what your project should look like nor is there only
ONE way to approach the analysis.
    Data
Each student will be assigned a personalized data set. These data refer to the same problem and have
the same structure. However, values of some of the key variables will vary across students meaning
that statistical results and any inferences drawn from them may differ over the data sets.
In “Assessments” on the website, students will see “Project” where you will find a link called
“CCResort Project data”. There you will be asked to enter your SID. A personalized data set will then
be produced in an EXCEL file. Each data file will contain 200 observations where each observation
refers to a separate booking at CCResort over the last 12 months. For each observation there are 6
    variables, which are:
ID = booking identification (Bid) number
    Income = 1 if family income > $100,000, = 0 if family income < $100,000
People = number of people in the booking party
Length = length of stay represented by number of nights
Age = age in years of person making the booking
Expenditure = total amount in dollars spent per booking over and above accommodation costs
    Tutorials
      Business essay  作業代寫
You should think about the problem and plan what needs to be done before you actually start
undertaking extensive computing work.  In order to assist in this process there will be some discussion
in tutorials. In particular, in week 6 tutorials you will be asked to review the project problem and to
discuss what is required by way of analysis.  You should download your data and save the file as part
of your preparation for week 6 tutorials. Also use EXCEL to generate a copy of the descriptive
statistics for your data. This will confirm that you have correctly downloaded your data and that you
are ready to commence your analysis. It is also required to answer a week 6 tutorial question.
In weeks 7 and 9 some time will be devoted to your progress and how more recent lecture material
might be relevant to the project tasks. Naturally you should consult your tutor or lecturer at any other
time should you have any other questions regarding the project.

they must submit individual project reports that represent their own work. All

check against all other projects ever submitted and material copied from
previous projects will be found and the source will be identified.
See the Part B of the course outline for UNSW policies on plagiarism.
Coverage:  You are only expected to use the statistical techniques developed in BES lectures
up until the end of week 9.
